Enchanted Rock State Park
If you’re looking for one of the hottest spots for climbing and vacationing in Texas then you’re sure to be pleased with Enchanted Rock State Park. This gorgeous has been attracting all types of climbers for many years with the variety of climbing spots housed in its 1,643.5 acres. You’ll not only get to have your choice of different climbing difficulties (excellent for the whole family), but you’ll also get to enjoy the spectacular views that complement these hikes.
Located on Big Sandy Creek, north of Fredericksburg, this beauty of an area was first acquired in 1978 by the Nature Conservancy of Texas, Inc., leading to the gorgeous park we know it as today. But don’t let that make you think it was the first time visitors came to this area—there have been several significant findings that prove humans visited this location over 11,000 years ago! That’s just one reason whey Enchanted Rock is designated as a National Natural Landmark and currently on the National Register of Historic Places.
Sometimes referred to as The Rock (not to be mistaken for Alcatraz Island in San Francisco, CA), this landmark features a gigantic, pink granite exfoliation dome that tops out at 425 feet above ground and reaches out over 640 acres. Don’t think it’s that tall? It’s still 1,825 feet above sea level and is among the largest underground rock formations (batholiths) in the U.S. So, if you uncovered some of the erosion you’d definitely have a taller rock formation.
